Design studios for fintech startups

Six studios, checked . We're one of them, listed alphabetically like the rest.

Design studios for fintech startups, a Hexcode design studio directory list

A design studio for fintech startups designs the product screens, onboarding and trust cues for a company that moves, lends or stores money. None of the studios below publishes a price, but Clutch minimums run from $10,000+ (Onething Design and Parallel) to $50,000+ (Clay).

Your users hand over their money and their ID. Every unclear screen is a reason to stop. A flow can be well designed and still fail a compliance review. A studio can design the flow, but it can't tell you what your regulator will accept.

We design for fintech too, so this list isn't ranked. Studios are in alphabetical order, us included, and nobody paid to be on it.

How we picked

A studio made the list if:

  • its own site names fintech, banking or payments clients
  • it works with startups or early-stage teams
  • it designs product interfaces, not only websites
  • it's a studio, not a solo freelancer

We left out freelancers, studios that list fintech without naming a client, and studios with no stated startup focus. Prices, ratings and client names come from each studio's own site or Clutch profile.

The six studios at a glance

None of the six publishes a price. Clay, Onething Design and Parallel set minimums on Clutch ($50,000+, $10,000+ and $10,000+), and Musemind's form offers budget bands from $5K to $100K+. Hexcode and Phenomenon Studio publish none.

Figures from each studio's own site or Clutch profile, checked . "Clutch minimum" is the minimum project size a studio sets on Clutch, not a quote. Where a rating says "per its site", the studio states it and we haven't checked it on Clutch. Named clients are ones the studio names on its own site, across all its work. Fintech clients, where it names them, are in each note.

Notes on each studio

Clay

Based in San Francisco, with New York and Austin on its Clutch profile. Its fintech work names Discover, STC Bank, Marqeta and Tipalti, plus a DeFi platform, Sky, and it names MoneyLion as an early-stage partner. It says it works with clients from enterprise to startups, on time and materials, a fixed fee or a retainer. It publishes no price. Clutch shows 4.8 from 32 reviews, a $50,000+ minimum project size and $150 to $199 an hour.

Good fit if: you've raised enough to work with a larger studio on payments or banking.
Not a fit if: your budget is under its $50,000+ Clutch minimum.

Hexcode (us)

A 15-person studio in Indore, founded in 2020, with US overlap until 1pm PT. Our fintech work includes Volt, which is building a new category of credit and where we've been the embedded design team for over two years on brand and product, plus Rupeek's product design and Haven's website. Our clients page shows Volt as acquired by DSG Group. We don't publish a price and have no Clutch reviews yet. Read the Volt case study

Good fit if: you want one team across brand, product and website for a lending or accounting product.
Not a fit if: you want a studio with a long list of banks behind it, or a price and a Clutch rating before the first call.

Musemind

Offices in New York, Dubai, Berlin, Riyadh, London and Dhaka, with no headquarters stated. Its case studies include Abyan Capital, a trading and market analysis app, and Prime Iraq, a financial access product, both tagged fintech on its site. It lists design and development, and works with startups, scaleups and established businesses. It publishes no prices, only budget bands from $5K to $100K+ on its form, and its site shows 4.9 on Clutch from 48 reviews.

Good fit if: you want a fintech app designed and built by the same studio.

Onething Design

Offices in Gurugram and Bengaluru and a San Francisco address, per its site, while Clutch lists Gurugram. It lists branding, websites, digital products and front-end development, and names HDFC, Kotak, RBL Bank, Motilal Oswal and 5paisa among its fintech work. Its hero text targets enterprises, SaaS businesses and growth startups. It publishes no price. Clutch shows 4.9 from 32 reviews, a $10,000+ minimum project size and $25 to $49 an hour.

Good fit if: you're building for banking or broking customers in India and want a studio that has done it.

Parallel

Offices in San Francisco and Bangalore, per its site. Its homepage groups clients by sector, with a fintech and BFSI row that includes Gullak, Juspay, Zeta, PayU and Kotak, and sorts its work by stage: seed to Series A, Series B and beyond. It publishes no price. Its Clutch profile shows a $10,000+ minimum project size and a 4.8 rating.

Good fit if: you're a fintech team past seed and want a studio that can stay with you through Series B.

Phenomenon Studio

Offices in Tallinn, Lugano and Dover. Its own article calls it a boutique fintech and Web3 studio, and names GlobalX, a decentralized exchange, and a KlickEx cross-border payments redesign for Nomupay. It says it suits startups and DeFi platforms that need to earn trust fast without an enterprise budget. It publishes no price. Clutch shows 5.0 from 54 reviews.

Good fit if: you're a payments, DeFi or crypto startup and need first-time users to trust the flow.

Does fintech need a different kind of design studio?

Not always. Most of the work is the same as any product, but a confusing screen costs more when it holds someone's money. What changes is compliance, onboarding and trust, so ask each studio about those three, with an example.

Does fintech need a different kind of design studio?
Where you areWhat fitsWatch for
Pre-launch, regulated productA studio that has shipped onboarding with identity checksA design your compliance team has to redo
A consumer money appTrust patterns and a fast prototype to testScreens built around features, not around fear
B2B payments or infrastructureA studio comfortable with dashboards and docsA good-looking dashboard nobody can reconcile
Crypto or DeFiA studio that has explained swaps and walletsJargon the user never learns

Six questions to ask before you sign

  1. Which fintech products have you designed, and can I speak to one founder?
  2. How do you design onboarding and identity checks for first-time users?
  3. How do you work with our compliance reviewers on a real project?
  4. How do you design error and failed-payment states?
  5. Can you design against our real API, not placeholder data?
  6. What would you not design until we have usage?

Questions

How much does a fintech design studio cost?

None of the studios here publishes a price. Clutch minimums run from $10,000+ for Onething Design and Parallel to $50,000+ for Clay, and Musemind's form offers budget bands from $5K to $100K+. Onething Design's Clutch hourly rate is $25 to $49, and Clay's is $150 to $199.

Do fintech startups need a studio that has done fintech before?

It helps, because onboarding and trust patterns carry over. All six name fintech clients or work: Clay names Marqeta and Tipalti, Onething Design names HDFC and Kotak, Musemind names Abyan Capital, Phenomenon Studio names GlobalX, Parallel names Gullak and Juspay, and we name Volt and Rupeek.

Can one studio design and build a fintech app?

Some can. Musemind lists design and development, Clay lists web and mobile development, and Onething Design lists front-end development. Phenomenon Studio lists development as a separate service.

Does a design studio handle compliance?

A studio designs the flow. Your counsel and your regulator decide what's acceptable, so ask each studio how it works with compliance reviewers on a real project.

Does it matter where the studio is?

For time zones, yes. Clay is based in San Francisco, Parallel has offices in San Francisco and Bangalore, and Onething Design in Gurugram, Bengaluru and San Francisco. We overlap with US hours until 1pm PT.

Why isn't this list ranked?

Because we're on it. Ranking a list we compete in would tell you more about us than about the studios. So it's alphabetical, with the facts we could check.

Building something people trust with their money?

Thirty minutes, no deck. Tell us what you're launching and we'll tell you what we'd test with real users first, even if the answer is one of the other five.
